Aircraft Cleaning & Detailing at Duxford Aerodrome

Duxford is hallowed ground — one of Europe's most famous historic aerodromes, alive with classic, vintage and warbird flying alongside its museum role. Aircraft here are heritage as much as machinery.

Our work at a field like this is the patient end of our craft: appearance care matched to historic materials, delivered with the restraint and respect these airframes are owed.

Around ninety minutes from base.

Heritage airframes, appropriate methods

Historic aircraft mix bare polished metal, decades-old paint systems, fabric, early plastics and materials that modern products were never tested on. Everything starts with a materials conversation with the owner or operator; methods are then chosen surface by surface — graded compounds on brightwork, gentle chemistry on paint, appropriate care on fabric, and no product at all where the honest answer is leave it alone. Anything that hints at a structural or preservation question goes to your engineer, not under our polisher.

Working alongside heritage operations

You arrange access with the operator or hangar; we work around public days and flying schedules, tidily and unobtrusively. For collections, a planned visit can bring several airframes to display standard in sequence.

Blue Horizon Aviation is an independent service provider and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, the operator of Duxford Aerodrome. Airside access is arranged by you or your handling agent — see our Service Terms. Appearance care only; we never perform maintenance or engineering work.

Questions

Duxford — questions answered

What owners and operators at Duxford Aerodrome ask us most.

Are modern detailing products safe on a warbird?

Not automatically — which is why product selection follows the materials conversation, not habit. Aviation-appropriate, gentle chemistry only, tested discreetly first, and skipped entirely where the surface says no.

Can you bring an aircraft to display or photography standard?

Yes — display preparation is scoped surface by surface and scheduled with a weather margin, so the aircraft presents at its peak on the day it matters.

Do you understand the line between cleaning and conservation?

We stay firmly on the cleaning side of it. Where an airframe's condition raises preservation questions, the right people to answer them are its engineers and conservators — we flag, we don't fix.
